The Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences (BMVS) graduate program, established in 1986, operates as a joint initiative between the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) and the Virginia Tech Graduate School. Unlike most academic units at the university, this interdisciplinary program holds departmental status within the Graduate School while remaining integrated with VMCVM.
BMVS aims to cultivate innovative, highly skilled researchers specializing in biomedical fields. Its connection with VMCVM provides exceptional access to fundamental research, preclinical animal studies, clinical veterinary cases, and translational research benefiting both animal and human health.
This graduate program fosters teamwork across disciplines to enhance health solutions for humans, animals, and ecosystems. Students develop core knowledge, research methodologies, and hands-on laboratory skills necessary for designing independent studies and addressing current and emerging challenges in biomedical sciences.
Flexibility forms the cornerstone of BMVS graduate education. Each student's curriculum—combining coursework, lab/field research, clinical exposure, and teaching practice—is customized based on their academic history, professional background, and career aspirations. The program takes pride in its exceptional faculty guidance, academic advising, and comprehensive support systems.
