The Physics Department provides graduate programs culminating in M.S. (with optional thesis) and Ph.D. degrees. Renowned for its global leadership in experimental and theoretical physics, the department specializes in astronomical, biological, condensed matter, nuclear, and particle physics research. These initiatives benefit from partnerships with Virginia Tech colleagues and external academic institutions. Degree candidates must complete mandatory and elective courses, dissertation work, and examinations. The Ph.D. program mandates 92 credit hours, comprising at least 60 hours dedicated to research and dissertation, alongside 32 hours of coursework. Doctoral candidates must take their qualifying exam before completing their third semester and their preliminary exam by the conclusion of their fifth semester.
