Virginia Tech's Nuclear Engineering Program (NEP) is an interdisciplinary initiative covering nuclear power, nonproliferation and security, medical radiation applications, and policy studies. Operating within the Mechanical Engineering Department, the NEP provides graduate degree options at both the Blacksburg campus and National Capital Region (NCR), features an accelerated MEng partnership with the US Naval Academy, and offers an undergraduate Nuclear Engineering minor.
Students from various fields can pursue a Nuclear Engineering graduate certificate (available at Blacksburg, NCR, and online) or the Nuclear Science, Technology, and Policy (NSTEP) certificate (Blacksburg and NCR). The NSTEP certificate represents a collaborative effort between Nuclear Engineering, Science/Technology/Society studies, and the School of Public and International Affairs. NEP faculty conduct research across nuclear applications including energy, security, healthcare, and policy. The program maintains strong partnerships with multiple VT departments - Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Computer Science, Public Affairs, and STS - while expanding external collaborations, including a study abroad program at Slovenia's Josef Stefan Institute. Faculty from these diverse programs regularly collaborate with NEP on educational and research projects.
