Virginia Tech provides Ph.D. and Ed.D. programs in Elementary Education at its Blacksburg location. The Ph.D. requires a two-year residency period. These doctoral programs follow a cohort-based approach, where students progress through identical courses in the same order with shared academic plans. The cohort system offers numerous advantages, fostering social connections, teamwork, and a supportive educational environment. Cohort members support one another in coursework completion and professional development, often developing close bonds and achieving timely degree completion. The Elementary Education department delivers doctoral degrees in Curriculum and Instruction, with Ph.D. or Ed.D. options specializing in: (a) PK-6 Elementary Education, (b) Reading/Literacy, and/or (c) Teacher Education. Graduates pursue teaching and research careers in higher education institutions and school systems. These doctoral programs emphasize theoretical foundations, research methodologies, practical applications, innovative approaches, scholarly investigation, and equitable practices.
