VCU's Master of Science in Human Genetics program equips students for thriving careers as researchers and educators in diverse settings such as academic institutions, government agencies, and private sector labs, while also laying the groundwork for further academic pursuits. This graduate program focuses on delivering comprehensive training in both human and molecular genetics. Its curriculum is carefully crafted to impart essential skills that enable graduates to progress into research and training roles across various human and molecular genetics fields. The program's architecture facilitates a step-by-step progression toward mastering contemporary knowledge in human and molecular genetics, while cultivating the capacity to analyze this information and apply it to pinpoint crucial research areas within the field. This educational approach connects theoretical knowledge with practical abilities to conceive, execute, and analyze experiments that explore identified research questions. Furthermore, students will hone their ability to effectively communicate fundamental concepts in human and molecular genetics, along with research methodologies, findings, and analyses, to different target audiences.
In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, applicants wishing to specialize in human genetics should have courses in biology, chemistry through organic chemistry, genetics and mathematics through calculus. TOEFL, IETLS, Duolingo or Pearson Test of English scores (international and non-native English-speaking applicants only)
