Bioinformatics represents a dynamic, interdisciplinary field that combines computer science, information technology, statistics, and biology to advance biological and biomedical research. VCU's approach to bioinformatics education leverages the collective knowledge and facilities across various university departments. Our offerings include two distinct tracks within the Master of Science in Bioinformatics program, along with doctoral-level opportunities through the Integrative Life Sciences Ph.D. program. The thesis-based Master of Science in Bioinformatics follows a conventional research-focused model, designed to equip students with the skills needed for scientific careers in academic, corporate, or government research settings. Through this program, students undertake rigorous coursework and conduct original research under faculty guidance, culminating in a thesis that demonstrates their problem-solving abilities and prepares them for either professional research positions or further doctoral studies. The non-thesis Professional Science Master's track focuses on developing leadership capabilities for the biotechnology, biomedical, and broader life sciences industries. This career-oriented program blends bioinformatics training with business acumen, featuring coursework in both technical and entrepreneurial subjects, plus a practical externship experience with industry or government partners. Graduates gain not only specialized bioinformatics expertise but also essential professional competencies sought by employers.
