With every new generation of art historians offering fresh research-driven perspectives on artworks, our current interpretation of each piece evolves, along with our grasp of the historical contexts surrounding its creation, collection, exhibition, and critique. In this way, art history functions as an ongoing scholarly dialogue. Graduate education equips students to become part of this community of scholars, educators, curators, and critics who sustain this vital exchange. The MA in Art History with a historical studies focus establishes core competencies in art historical research and writing while providing a broad overview of modern and contemporary art from worldwide viewpoints. This program readies graduates for MA-level roles in arts and cultural institutions. It also serves as excellent preparation for doctoral studies and subsequent careers requiring a PhD, such as university-level teaching and most curatorial appointments.
