VCU's bachelor's program in Environmental Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending conventional classroom instruction with practical, hands-on learning to introduce students to fundamental principles and connections across environmental life sciences, earth sciences, and technology. The curriculum provides significant customization options, allowing students to personalize their academic path through numerous elective courses in specialized subjects. Potential focus areas might encompass environmental technology, policy development, geospatial and statistical methods, outdoor education, or aquatic ecosystem studies. The program highly recommends pursuing internship opportunities, engaging in undergraduate research projects, and joining domestic or international field courses during studies. Graduates will acquire the technical, analytical, and applied competencies necessary to thrive in entry-level roles across government agencies, environmental organizations, and corporate sectors.
VCU applications for admissions and scholarship consideration will be reviewed based on academic performance at an accredited high school or on GED scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred. Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application.
Essays are required of all applicants and must be submitted with the Common Application. At least one recommendation is preferred for all applicants. Applicants will be asked to submit recommender information before submitting the Common Application. Recommenders will be sent an email on the applicant’s behalf requesting a recommendation. First-year applicants are required to submit an up-to-date high school transcript (including senior-year curriculum and grades, if available). GED holders must submit their official GED scores.
