The history program offers students a comprehensive exploration of the past through multiple perspectives. The public history specialization leverages faculty knowledge and Richmond's rich historical resources to connect academic study with real-world applications. This field encompasses diverse professions including archivists, museum professionals, historical interpreters, preservation experts, and digital history specialists - all combining academic rigor with practical skills. Current debates about historical interpretation demonstrate this discipline's dynamic nature and societal relevance. This academic path equips students for various professional opportunities and advanced studies while fostering engaged citizenship.The BA in History with a public history concentration requires 120 total credits, including at least 36 history credits. Students must pass HIST 300 with a C or better before taking more than six credits of upper-level history courses.The curriculum includes HIST 323, HIST 422, and one additional upper-division public history course. Students can choose from numerous specialized courses covering different themes, regions, and time periods. A culminating internship with a public history organization provides hands-on experience. Regular advisor consultations help students tailor their studies to meet requirements while aligning with personal interests and career goals.
VCU applications for admissions and scholarship consideration will be reviewed based on academic performance at an accredited high school or on GED scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred. Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application. Essays are required of all applicants and must be submitted with the Common Application. At least one recommendation is preferred for all applicants. Applicants will be asked to submit recommender information before submitting the Common Application. Recommenders will be sent an email on the applicant’s behalf requesting a recommendation. First-year applicants are required to submit an up-to-date high school transcript (including senior-year curriculum and grades, if available). GED holders must submit their official GED scores.
