In today's globalized society, mastering additional languages has become increasingly vital. The capacity to bridge linguistic, ethnic, racial, and cultural divides fosters meaningful connections and contributes to building a more inclusive, understanding world. Globally, employers highly prize the communication abilities, cultural awareness, and hands-on experience that language learners gain through academic programs, internships, community engagement, and international study. Bilingual proficiency provides distinct advantages: VCU alumni with language expertise rank among the top candidates for positions in global corporations, NGOs, and government organizations. They're also eligible for teaching roles in educational institutions, where they frequently become inspirational figures, guides, and community leaders. VCU's Foreign Language B.A. program enables students to concentrate on single or dual language studies, with opportunities to integrate their major with other fields through personalized academic advising. The curriculum guides students in examining worldwide cultural heritage and historical contexts while acquiring practical language skills applicable across local, national, international, and digital environments. A particular emphasis is placed on cultivating intercultural communication proficiency.
VCU applications for admissions and scholarship consideration will be reviewed based on academic performance at an accredited high school or on GED scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred. Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application.
Essays are required of all applicants and must be submitted with the Common Application. At least one recommendation is preferred for all applicants. Applicants will be asked to submit recommender information before submitting the Common Application. Recommenders will be sent an email on the applicant’s behalf requesting a recommendation. First-year applicants are required to submit an up-to-date high school transcript (including senior-year curriculum and grades, if available). GED holders must submit their official GED scores.
