The Bachelor of Arts in Cinema program emphasizes narrative film creation, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge of visual storytelling and hands-on technical skills essential for film production. Cinema students team up on class projects guided by instructors who have real-world industry experience. During summer terms, the School of the Arts sponsors collaborative film projects involving students and faculty together. The curriculum covers practical training with professional film equipment like cameras, lighting systems, audio gear, and editing programs, while also examining cinematic history and theory. Students gain expertise in various aspects of filmmaking including scriptwriting, production management, direction, and industry business practices. To earn the B.A. in Cinema, students must complete 120 total credits with 48 in the major, including at least 45 upper-level (300-400) credits. Unlike some arts programs, this major doesn't require completion of an Art Foundation Program for admission. Most full-time cinema students typically earn their degree after finishing the summer term following their junior year.
Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in the program.
Majors in the Cinema Program may choose to complete a second major or minor in any other department or program that supports their educational and artistic goals. Alternatively, students may create a customized plan of study for a second major by requesting admission to the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program.
