The Bachelor of Arts in Art History is a liberal arts degree that offers an academic curriculum introducing students to scholarly approaches, theoretical frameworks, and research methodologies in art history and related humanities fields. The program emphasizes the study of diverse cultures, historical eras, and geographic regions. It also provides opportunities for specialized research projects and museum internships, creating an ideal foundation for advanced graduate studies in art history. Upon graduation, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes: Graduates will master art historical vocabulary and recognize significant artworks within their historical settings.
Graduates will develop strong research skills and produce written work combining visual analysis with contemporary scholarship to interpret art.
Graduates will acquire critical reading abilities and apply art historical research techniques in their academic writing.
Graduates will learn to analyze artworks in relation to their original historical, cultural, and/or geographical contexts.

Qualification Requirements

Art history majors must earn a minimum grade of C in each ARTH course to be applied to the curriculum requirements. VCU applications for admissions and scholarship consideration will be reviewed based on academic performance at an accredited high school or on GED scores. The college preparatory curriculum is highly preferred. Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application.

 

Essays are required of all applicants and must be submitted with the Common Application. At least one recommendation is preferred for all applicants. Applicants will be asked to submit recommender information before submitting the Common Application. Recommenders will be sent an email on the applicant’s behalf requesting a recommendation. First-year applicants are required to submit an up-to-date high school transcript (including senior-year curriculum and grades, if available). GED holders must submit their official GED scores.
