The Department of Spanish and Portuguese's graduate program provides academic coursework and research guidance across all fields of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian literature, alongside related studies in linguistics, film, cultural analysis, and theoretical approaches. The department maintains collaborative relationships with multiple academic units, including the Center for Latin American Studies, Women's and Gender Studies program, Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities, Center for Second Language Studies, Center for Teaching, and the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA). Recognized for exceptional research output, the graduate faculty earned top national rankings in the 2007 Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index.
Earning a Ph.D. in Spanish necessitates completing 63 credit hours, incorporating the 30-hour M.A. requirements plus 9 hours for a minor (typically Portuguese), along with an M.A. thesis, Comprehensive Examination, Qualifying Examination, and dissertation. Students may substitute a traditional minor with interdisciplinary certificates in Latino/a Studies, Latin American Studies, or other approved cross-departmental programs. Portuguese proficiency must be demonstrated through graduate-level coursework, though the Director of Graduate Studies may approve alternative languages in special circumstances.
