The Department of Physics & Astronomy at Vanderbilt University provides graduate students with the chance to conduct groundbreaking research alongside distinguished faculty members. Our program spans diverse research areas—from astronomy and cosmology to biological/medical physics, condensed matter/materials science, and particle/nuclear physics—while maintaining an intimate, supportive community. Currently, our department consists of 27 full-time faculty members, roughly the same number of postdoctoral researchers, and around 60 graduate students. We offer PhD programs in both Physics and Astrophysics, with opportunities to obtain MA or MS degrees either en route to the PhD or through dedicated Master's thesis work.
