Vanderbilt fosters a vibrant, multifaceted community of scholars dedicated to exploring Science, Technology, and Medicine through historical lenses. STM students gain comprehensive exposure to specialized historiographies while receiving extensive training across relevant historical contexts and eras. The program cultivates scholars who identify equally as STM specialists and historians.
Faculty research spans diverse temporal, geographic, and thematic areas - from African material culture to Chinese medical practices, and Western intellectual traditions. Their publications cover subjects ranging from contemporary privacy issues and Darwin's early years to diabetes research, Einstein's legacy, Qi concepts, clinical experimentation, and technological forecasting.
The community thrives through two collaborative workshops: one student-led initiative for departmental STM scholars, and another engaging the wider university, reflecting the inherently cross-disciplinary character of STM research.
