Vanderbilt's PhD program in Modern European Studies cultivates scholars and educators with comprehensive expertise in European history and its global connections. Students receive intensive training in both country-specific historical traditions within their regional and language specialties, alongside interdisciplinary themes like environmental studies, nationalism, legal and imperial systems, musical heritage, minority rights, religious developments, conflict studies, and technological progress.
Modern Europe doctoral candidates generally complete four semesters of coursework before undertaking comprehensive examinations. The third year focuses on crafting the dissertation proposal and preparing for research, while the fourth year is dedicated to fieldwork. Students typically devote one to two subsequent years to writing, with the expectation of completing their dissertation by year six.
Through selective annual admissions, Vanderbilt's Modern Europe program fosters intimate academic guidance, with faculty mentors providing personalized attention in seminars and throughout dissertation development. This support extends to professional development areas including funding applications, career preparation, and teaching opportunities. The European studies faculty has successfully guided over 40 doctoral candidates, securing prestigious academic positions and research fellowships across Europe and North America.
