The Ph.D. program is structured for full-time students to finish within five years. Degree requirements include 72 total credit hours: 52 hours of classes and 20 hours dedicated to dissertation work. Those enrolled in the CMAP joint degree program will undertake additional specialized coursework. The English Department does not grant transfer credits for classes taken before joining Vanderbilt University.
Important: While the department doesn't usually award standalone M.A. degrees, doctoral candidates automatically earn an M.A. while progressing toward their Ph.D. Students must fulfill all M.A. requirements by their second year's fall semester. In rare circumstances, the Graduate Studies Committee may admit exceptional applicants to a two-year M.A. program, which demands a complete 52-credit course load, a thesis, and secured external funding.
Qualified applicants with bachelor’s or comparable non-U.S. degrees are eligible for admission to the Graduate School. Applications from international students with three-year bachelor’s degrees will also be considered.
The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based TOEFL is 570, and for the Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.
For IELTS, the minimum acceptable score will vary by program. In many cases, a score of at least 7.0 is desirable.
