The Department of Psychology within the College of Arts and Sciences provides Vanderbilt students with a unique chance to complete both a Bachelor's (BA) and Master's (MA) degree in just five years.
Gaining substantial research experience is perhaps the most crucial factor when preparing for graduate studies in psychology, neuroscience, and related fields. Beyond maintaining strong grades, competitive GRE scores, and compelling recommendation letters, successful applicants to elite graduate programs typically possess at least
a year of research involvement. Some candidates have completed honors programs, while others have served as undergraduate research assistants. Many have worked full-time in research roles for several years before applying. This combined
BA/MA pathway presents an alternative method for acquiring the essential research background and
skills needed for admission to top-tier graduate programs. It also creates avenues for
further research engagement for undergraduates currently in honors programs or those
working as lab assistants. Furthermore, it enables students pursuing
non-psychology or non-neuroscience undergraduate degrees to better
prepare for doctoral studies in these fields.
This rigorous, research-focused program maintains highly selective admissions. It's primarily designed
for students contemplating PhD or MD-PhD programs with research emphases
in psychology, psychiatry, cognitive science, neuroscience, learning sciences, and similar
disciplines. The program may also benefit those interested in research-driven
marketing and decision-making programs at business schools or
law and human behavior studies at certain law schools. While offering
no clinical practice training, it provides exceptional
preparation for doctoral programs in clinical science that adhere to the
scientist-practitioner model.
