The Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies provides an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of a region that has served as a meeting point of civilizations for millennia. Our program investigates the profound contributions of Greek and Roman societies while tracing the rise and expansion of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam across Eastern territories. The curriculum also delves into the transformation of southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia from ancient through medieval times to the modern era, examining how these areas have engaged with their historical roots.

Our faculty employ innovative teaching methods that combine traditional scholarship with digital humanities approaches, analyzing diverse sources including texts, artifacts, visual materials, and spatial data. Students can acquire proficiency in various ancient and medieval languages from Europe and the Middle East while participating in immersive overseas experiences, ranging from language immersion programs to archaeological excavations and cultural landscape studies.

Classical and Mediterranean Studies majors gain comprehensive knowledge of the region's geography and history while specializing in one of three academic tracks. Though these pathways share foundational content, each offers unique perspectives and skill development. Prospective graduate students should consult with advisors to create a tailored course of study.
