The university's Physics Department offers some of its longest-standing degree programs. Over time, the department has maintained its commitment to educating students while offering extensive research possibilities across various physics disciplines. Both faculty and students regularly earn distinguished honors from the university, Utah state, and national organizations. USU physics students have achieved recognition as National Science Foundation Graduate Fellows, Goldwater Scholars, and Rhodes Scholars, while consistently securing awards at academic conferences. With intentionally small class sizes, the program ensures personalized faculty guidance and fosters a supportive research environment. Available concentrations include complexity studies, field theory, astrophysics and spacetime research, plasma physics, space science, and surface physics.
Upper Atmospheric Physics (MS):
This focus area explores space physics, covering subjects like electromagnetic phenomena, plasma dynamics, solar-terrestrial interactions, and space environment engineering. Recognized as a Western Regional Graduate Program, it allows students from qualifying western states to receive in-state tuition benefits.
