The History Department has earned distinction from the American Historical Association as one of just 12 exceptional history programs in the U.S. and Canada, honored for its exemplary teaching and academic leadership.
Graduate students from throughout the nation and internationally are drawn to the program. With each incoming class capped at about 12 students, every graduate receives personalized attention. Additionally, master's candidates don't vie with PhD students for faculty mentorship or historical research opportunities.
History faculty boast diverse specializations, enabling students to explore numerous historical eras and global regions. The department particularly excels in environmental history, religious studies, and Western U.S. history.
MA candidates must demonstrate competency in at least one foreign language, while MS students substitute this requirement by integrating computational, social, or natural science methodologies into their research. During their initial year, each student collaborates with their advisory committee to create a customized course plan.
