The Folklore Studies program at Utah State University enables students to examine American life and cultures through multiple academic lenses. This interdisciplinary approach allows learners to combine diverse fields of study into a comprehensive view of American culture and its historical roots. With particular expertise in the American West, Canadian and Mexican border regions, U.S. history, literature, folklore, creative nonfiction, and visual culture/environmental studies, the program empowers students to create customized academic paths that transcend both physical and conceptual borders. Graduates develop skills to interpret and connect various cultural forms, preparing them for academic or professional careers. The MA program mandates foreign language proficiency, while the MS option follows the same curriculum without this requirement. Folklore:
Folklore scholars investigate all aspects of grassroots cultural expressions. Coursework spans global traditions, exploring subjects like folktales, urban myths, personal narratives, children's folklore, folk art, street art, supernatural beliefs, and more. Students can select between two focus areas: academic folklore (for teaching and research careers) or public folklore (for roles in government, arts organizations, and museums).
