Chemistry explores the nature of substances, their characteristics, and how they interact with each other and energy. At USU, chemistry students can engage in research early in their academic journey, starting as lab assistants and progressing to independent projects. Middle and high school chemistry instructors teach students about elemental properties, chemical reactions between different elements, and the correct methods for writing scientific formulas. For aspiring secondary school chemistry educators, the department offers two pathways. The chemistry teaching track suits those who want to teach without pursuing the more rigorous American Chemical Society certification. Alternatively, the chemical education focus within the chemistry major includes extra coursework in math, statistics, and chemistry to qualify students for ACS certification.
