The History Department has earned distinction from the American Historical Association as one of 12 premier history programs across the U.S. and Canada, honored for its exceptional teaching and academic guidance. The department excels particularly in studies of the modern American West, classical antiquity, early modern European history, and Atlantic World studies. Undergraduate history students at USU engage in comprehensive research projects, developing skills in investigation, presentation, and scholarly communication under faculty mentorship. These experiences are complemented by international study programs and other academic opportunities. The curriculum emphasizes vital competencies in research methodology, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, and effective communication—abilities prized across numerous professions. Approximately 30% of USU history alumni enter teaching professions, while the majority pursue careers in legal, medical, or business sectors. The program primarily offers a BA degree requiring foreign language proficiency, though students may alternatively select a science-intensive degree path through the College of Science.
