An Elementary Education degree equips students to obtain a Professional License from the Utah State Board of Education for teaching grades K-6. Utah State's program stands out by allowing students to begin classroom experiences in their first year, unlike many universities where this typically starts in junior year. Upon graduation, students will have accumulated over 400 hours of classroom time and child-focused field experiences. The teacher preparation program, known as the Bridge to Professional Practice (BPP), uses a suspension bridge metaphor, with strong anchors at both ends to guide students into professional teaching. Undergraduates can even start endorsement programs usually offered at the graduate level. This major is ideal for transfer students with associate degrees, as the curriculum ensures a smooth transition and timely completion. With nationwide teacher shortages and the need for skilled educators, the School of Teacher Education and Leadership offers two licensure pathways—Licensure Lane and General Studies Lane—determined through an application after completing a 12-credit Preparation Anchor.
Completing all major requirements leads to a BS degree, while a BA additionally requires proficiency in one or more foreign languages.
