Our English MA program takes an expansive view of literature, encompassing all texts open to critical examination. This broad definition includes classic writers like Shakespeare and Melville alongside contemporary media such as films, TV shows, digital content, pop culture, and visual arts. Our graduate courses provide students with a comprehensive, theory-driven education in both traditional literary studies and emerging fields. Whether exploring Shakespearean drama or Scorsese's cinema, students graduate with advanced knowledge in their chosen subjects, guided by renowned faculty who are active scholars. Upcoming seminars feature diverse topics like a Disney studies course with a research excursion to Disneyland, examinations of text-textile connections from ancient Greece to modern labor movements, film adaptations of novels, American Modernism, Gothic literature, early American captivity narratives, graphic novels, Shakespearean plays, Milton's influence on Romantic poetry, and 18th-century intersections of art, literature, and music.
Recent graduate theses in our literature program have explored fascinating subjects: medieval portrayals of Saracens, grotesque cowboy imagery in Annie Proulx's stories, narrative techniques in the Elephant Man's story, Gothic Pastoral elements in American poetry, and Native American film reception at Wind River Reservation.
Many MA graduates continue to PhD programs in English, and we provide strong support during the rigorous application process. While PhD admission isn't guaranteed, our alumni currently pursue doctoral studies at top institutions including the University of Michigan, Emory, Wisconsin, Arizona State, and Vanderbilt. Recent PhD graduates now teach at prestigious universities like Stanford, Arizona, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Other alumni have built successful careers in public policy, community college teaching, technical writing, publishing, and education. Some MA graduates choose law school or business school, where their advanced research and communication skills give them a competitive edge.
