Explore how to assist individuals in enhancing their speech, language, and hearing abilities. Gain proficiency in American Sign Language. This undergraduate program serves as foundational training for pursuing advanced studies in speech-language pathology, audiology, or related fields.
The Bachelor of Science curriculum equips students for graduate-level work in communication disorders. The program covers typical speech and language comprehension and production mechanisms, including anatomical, physiological, and neurological aspects. It also examines typical childhood speech and language development while introducing various disorders and therapeutic approaches. Supplementary coursework includes anatomy, psychology, child development, statistics, and linguistics. Students gain introductory clinical exposure by observing sessions at the UW Speech & Hearing Clinic as part of their studies.
This undergraduate degree provides essential preparation for graduate programs in speech-language pathology or audiology. Note that a clinical graduate degree is mandatory to practice as a licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist. The UW B.S. program doesn't fulfill the qualifications for becoming a speech-language pathology assistant (SLP-A); additional coursework and practical experience from another institution would be necessary. For details about SLP-A certification programs, refer to ASHA.org.
