This program focuses on music students aiming to specialize in their principal performance discipline.
Those applying for the Music Performance String Emphasis must exhibit exceptional playing ability. An in-person audition is mandatory, though under exceptional circumstances, recorded performances may substitute. Applicants should reach out to faculty in their performance area to discuss specific audition requirements and processes.
Although GRE scores aren't mandatory for admission, prospective students are encouraged to complete these exams early if they intend to apply for UWM's Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship or pursue further graduate studies after earning their master's degree at UWM.
All new and transfer graduate students must complete diagnostic tests in music history and theory prior to their initial semester at UWM. Waivers may be granted in rare cases, but students cannot advance beyond their first year without completing these assessments. The exams help faculty evaluate whether students can enroll in graduate-level courses or need to address any foundational gaps first.
