The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides a graduate program culminating in a Master of Arts degree, concentrating on Hispanic cultures, language, linguistics, and literature. Students completing the Spanish MA who opt to pursue a PhD will have significant progress in their chosen specialization area. For those not continuing to doctoral studies or academic careers, opportunities exist in various professions demanding advanced Spanish language skills and expertise in Hispanic literature, culture, and linguistics.

Five key learning objectives have been established by the Department for Spanish MA students. These outcomes align with the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning, as outlined by the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant must meet general admission requirements for the Graduate School, as established by the graduate faculty of the university, plus the following requirements to be considered for admission: A bachelor's degree with a major in Spanish, foreign languages with an emphasis in Spanish, comparative literature, Hispanic linguistics, or translation, or with a combination of courses that will, in the opinion of the Department, allow the student to participate fully in the program. A 3.0 grade point average in the last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework. A narrative statement of intent, written in both Spanish and in English. A Curriculum Vitae. An academic writing sample in Spanish.

You must have attended this institution for at least one year and the degree was earned at an institution in the United States, and you have lived and worked continuously in the U.S since earning the degree. Cambridge English: Advanced / Cambridge English Proficiency C1 level or higher. TOEFL IBT (not Home Edition) - 79 120, IELTS - 6.5 9.0.
