The Neuroscience program features four foundational courses: behavioral neuroscience, cellular and molecular neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, and a proseminar in biological psychology. Additional requirements consist of statistics coursework, participation in the neuroscience seminar (requiring three semesters of formal enrollment), and three elective courses selected with guidance from the major advisor. For comprehensive information, students should refer to the department's Doctoral Student Handbook.

Neuroscience focuses on investigating the nervous system. The program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise essential for successful careers in academia or industry. Participants join the broader Milwaukee Area Neuroscience community, comprising faculty and students from UWM, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Marquette University. The curriculum covers diverse methodologies involving both animal research and human studies, encompassing experimental design, behavioral assessment, neurophysiological techniques, sterile surgical procedures, protein and mRNA quantification, immunohistochemistry, eye movement tracking, and functional MRI. Research areas currently being explored include molecular processes in learning and memory, fMRI mapping of memory and emotional centers in humans and rodents, exercise's impact on cerebral circulation, neural recovery after injury, visual attention systems, age-related cognitive changes, and calcium's role in cell death during ischemia.
