The Spanish for Healthcare Providers (SHP) Certificate Program equips students with essential language abilities and cultural insights to effectively assist Spanish-speaking patients in navigating healthcare systems. Program participants graduate with both medical Spanish fluency and cultural awareness of Hispanic communities, enabling them to better understand how cultural factors influence healthcare decisions and service delivery.
This certification strengthens professional qualifications for those pursuing patient-facing roles like physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or physical therapists, as well as professionals interacting with Spanish-speaking populations in healthcare contexts, including insurance representatives and patient advocates.
Hispanic and Latino communities represent the largest minority population in the United States, with Spanish-speaking individuals forming the most rapidly expanding demographic group. In Milwaukee specifically, nearly 20% of residents speak Spanish (2020 Census data). This growing population creates increasing demand for healthcare professionals capable of communicating with and advocating for Spanish-speaking patients.
