The American Indian Studies program offers students a comprehensive exploration of Native American tribal nations across North America and their ongoing cultural and societal significance. Our curriculum welcomes all who seek to learn about the treaties, histories, diverse cultures, and political developments that have shaped the continent and remain pertinent today. While UWM does draw many students with Native heritage, our classrooms include individuals from varied backgrounds united by their passion for studying history to influence contemporary issues. With 565 federally recognized tribes in the U.S., including 12 in Wisconsin, UWM stands as a leader in this field due to our strategic location and having the largest Native American faculty among UW System schools. Like minors, certificates require comparable credits but integrate courses from multiple disciplines rather than focusing on one department.
