The Women's & Gender Studies program at UWM supports scholarly exploration and curriculum creation focused on women and gender topics, manages interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate WGS degree programs, and collaborates with community, state, and national organizations on women's issues.
In 1974, UWM became the first UW System institution to establish a Women's Studies program. Presently, UWM students can choose from a WGS undergraduate major or minor, a Graduate Certificate, a Master of Arts degree, plus two dual-degree options: a combined Master's in Women's & Gender Studies/Library and Information Studies and a Master's in Women's & Gender Studies/Social Work. The program now features more than 90 core and cross-listed courses from about thirty campus departments, instructed by WGS faculty, academic staff, and numerous affiliated instructors. With over 100 affiliated faculty and staff university-wide, the program attracts around 2,000 student enrollments in WGS courses annually.
