The UWM Linguistics program provides undergraduate students with options for either a major (30 credits) or minor (18 credits). Within the major, students can choose between two specialized paths: General Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The General track emphasizes fundamental aspects of theoretical linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics, while allowing students to explore experimental approaches and select electives such as advanced foreign language classes. The Applied track maintains this theoretical foundation while incorporating specialized coursework in language instruction and teaching methodologies. Both the major and minor programs complement various academic disciplines, including Psychology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, and foreign language studies.
Studying linguistics equips students with valuable skills for diverse professional fields and serves as strong preparation for advanced academic work in linguistics and related disciplines.
