The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's creative writing undergraduate program emphasizes both creativity and writing equally. Throughout each course, students continuously hone their imaginative abilities while producing (and revising) a substantial volume of written work. This cultivates an exceptionally varied and gifted community of writers producing diverse works including poetry, novels, short stories, and both digital and print zines. They contribute to Furrow, the program's renowned undergraduate literary journal, and participate in or coordinate numerous creative writing activities both on campus and beyond throughout the academic year.
English majors specializing in creative writing can concentrate on poetry or fiction, yet all students explore multiple genres before completing their degree. The curriculum primarily consists of creative writing workshops, where student work serves as the central material, especially in upper-level courses. Through this approach, learners enhance not just their writing proficiency but also their analytical and evaluative capabilities.
