Comparative Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary discipline exploring social identity and power dynamics across historical and modern settings. This field primarily focuses on race, gender, and sexuality. Within the Ethnic Studies curriculum, students can choose from diverse courses and incorporate relevant classes from other university departments into their studies. Distinctively at UWM, our program includes specialized courses on the Hmong diaspora. With Wisconsin hosting the nation's third-largest Hmong American community, UWM provides an exceptional environment for studying this population.

The interdisciplinary Committee Major concentrating on Comparative Ethnic Studies stands out as one of few programs mandating an internship before graduation, guaranteeing students gain practical community experience. This program is overseen by the College of Letters and Science's interdepartmental Comparative Ethnic Studies Advisory Committee.
