Fundamentally, biology explores living organisms—humans, plants, and animals. The Biological Sciences program caters to students pursuing careers in healthcare, agriculture, environmental conservation, food production, manufacturing, biotechnology, and similar industries. Undergraduates can opt for a comprehensive general biology degree or focus on cell/molecular biology or ecology. The department also offers a microbiology degree. Numerous hands-on research experiences help students strengthen their resumes for professional or graduate opportunities. Advanced master's and doctoral programs are available for graduate students.
At UWM, biology students gain a robust grounding in biological and natural sciences, equipping them for careers or further education. The major requires core coursework alongside lab and field research in cell biology, genetics, and ecology. Students also undertake independent research and internships with external organizations. Following foundational courses, they select advanced electives in Molecular Genetics, Neurobiology, Ecology and Evolution, Microbiology, and Marine/Freshwater Biology.
