The Department of Geoscience offers advanced degree programs culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy qualifications. Faculty members' diverse research specialties enable students to pursue investigations across key earth science disciplines such as geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, microbial geoscience, mineralogy, nano-geoscience, paleontology, paleoclimatology/paleooceanography, petrology, quaternary geology, sedimentology, structural geology, and tectonics.
Graduate students must establish a comprehensive grounding in geoscience and related scientific fields before focusing on specialized areas. Course selection occurs through collaboration with a three-member advisory committee. All graduate studies mandate independent research and scholarly work. Advanced degree candidates are required to produce novel contributions, develop innovative concepts, and prepare a dissertation worthy of publication in peer-reviewed journals, books, or technical reports. Additionally, students may pursue a combined master's degree in geoscience and water resources management upon approval from both programs and the Graduate School.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
