Since the 1890s, when historian Frederick Jackson Turner introduced his groundbreaking Frontier Thesis at the American Historical Association's Chicago meeting during the 1893 Columbian Exposition, American history has formed a foundational element of our department's academic focus.

Our faculty members specialize in North American history from colonial times to the late 20th century, with particular emphasis on environmental studies, Western expansion, gender and racial issues, slavery, political and cultural developments, education systems, sports history, economic systems, intellectual movements, military affairs, and the histories of African American, Asian American, and Native American communities.
