The Master of Arts in historical musicology helps graduate students develop extensive knowledge across musical repertoires and musicological approaches. In addition to comprehensive courses on various eras of European music, the program provides classes in American music, popular genres, African-American musical traditions, gender studies, and performance techniques. Master's candidates are also urged to expand their expertise in music theory and pursue interdisciplinary studies beyond the School of Music. This two-year degree concludes with a thesis, typically an extended version of a seminar paper, along with a thorough exam testing knowledge of all music history periods. Proficiency in German reading is mandatory for the M.A. completion.
