Shortly after the University of Wisconsin was established in 1848, this department emerged as one of the institution's earliest academic divisions. The Department of Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies (CANES) has maintained a distinguished legacy of scholarly achievement in philology, literary analysis, archaeology, and ancient history. For graduate students, the department provides both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies - Classics.
The program's central objective is to acquaint students with fundamental linguistic, historical, and philological components of classical and ancient near eastern scholarship. Under the mentorship of renowned experts, students develop skills to perform innovative research across diverse fields including gender studies, literary theory, translation studies, environmental criticism, and classical reception studies.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
