The Italian studies program provides both Master of Arts and PhD degrees. Each semester typically features a diverse selection of courses and seminars, carefully balanced across different literary eras. Classes generally convene two or three times weekly, covering broad thematic periods or genres, while seminars meet once per week for two-hour intensive discussions on specialized subjects. Over a two-to-three year cycle, the curriculum spans all centuries of Italian literature, encompassing cultural studies, film, civilization, and language structure. Italian serves as the primary language for graduate-level instruction, with significant focus on language proficiency development.
The program equips graduate students with robust training in both academic research and pedagogical skills. All accepted candidates receive funding commitments, with standard teaching assistant packages offering four to five years of support, adjusted based on prior graduate study experience.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
