The Department of Consumer Science creates and shares knowledge about how relationships between consumers, businesses, and government can improve quality of life for individuals, families, and communities. The curriculum examines multiple aspects of well-being such as financial stability, consumer rights, healthcare access, nutrition security, affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and related public policies. This interdisciplinary program draws faculty expertise from economics, marketing, sociology, retail management, social work, and consumer studies. Several professors hold dual roles with Cooperative Extension, offering students hands-on experience in community engagement and practical research. Doctoral candidates frequently partner with faculty on research initiatives and outreach projects, while completing required coursework in consumer psychology, household finance, and research methodologies.
