Shortly after the University of Wisconsin was established in 1848, the department formed as one of the institution's earliest academic divisions. The Department of Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies (CANES) has maintained a distinguished legacy of outstanding work in philological research, literary analysis, archaeology, and ancient history. For graduate students, the department provides both master's and doctoral degree programs in Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies - Classics.
The program's central objective is to acquaint students with fundamental linguistic, historical, and philological components of classical and ancient near eastern studies. Under the mentorship of renowned experts, students additionally develop skills to perform innovative research across diverse fields including gender studies, literary theory, translation studies, and classical reception studies.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
