The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Chemistry Department is dedicated to pioneering research in chemical sciences while providing exceptional education for undergraduates, graduates, and postdoctoral researchers. Our research excellence spans traditional fields like physical, analytical, inorganic, and organic chemistry, while expanding into emerging areas such as environmental chemistry, chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and chemistry education research. We foster a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually vibrant community that builds connections with researchers across campus, nationally, and globally.
Our chemistry graduate program consistently ranks among the nation's best, offering a Ph.D. with specializations in analytical, inorganic, materials, organic, physical chemistry, chemical biology, and chemistry education research. Students can broaden their studies through coursework in related disciplines like physics, mathematics, computer science, biochemistry, and chemical engineering.
State-of-the-art facilities support diverse research areas including synthetic chemistry, structural analysis, bio-organic chemistry, molecular dynamics, spectroscopy, theoretical chemistry, materials science, and chemical education. These resources are complemented by departmental computing centers, specialized instrumentation, and campus-wide facilities including those provided by the Division of Information Technology (DoIT).
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
