Viruses continue to pose significant public health threats, responsible for a diverse array of illnesses and increasingly dangerous worldwide outbreaks such as Ebola. They contribute to approximately 15% of cancer cases in humans, may play roles in neurological and chronic conditions, and are growing concerns in bioterrorism. Emerging pathogens including HIV, MERS, and Zika are appearing more frequently due to factors like population growth, habitat disruption, rapid viral mutations, and other global trends. Simultaneously, viruses offer valuable understanding of cellular processes and serve as important tools in medical research, biotechnology, and nanotechnology.
Building upon UW-Madison's renowned expertise in virology, the CMB Virology Focus Group brings together numerous collaborative laboratories conducting groundbreaking research on viral evolution, replication, host interactions, disease mechanisms, and control strategies. Students in the Virology Program become part of an inclusive, cooperative research environment that employs and advances state-of-the-art techniques in genomics, computational biology, advanced microscopy, structural analysis, and related disciplines.
