The graduate program aims to develop skilled and innovative astronomers for careers in academic research and teaching. Earning a PhD demonstrates comprehensive understanding and proficiency in contemporary astrophysics methods. Students pursuing a doctorate should be well-versed in cutting-edge astrophysical challenges and capable of conducting independent, advanced research in their chosen specialization. During the initial two years, candidates must serve as teaching assistants and are advised to collaborate with multiple faculty and researchers.
The Astronomy Department provides a PhD program in astronomy. While a master's degree option exists, applicants are typically not accepted solely for this terminal degree.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
