The Language Sciences program at UW-Madison serves as an interdisciplinary center for research and academic partnership, home to the Linguistics degree program. Linguistics represents the systematic examination of human language, exploring both universal linguistic patterns and the specific structures of individual languages. Undergraduate linguistics majors should develop the capacity to-
exhibit comprehensive understanding of core linguistic domains including phonetics (physical and acoustic aspects of speech), phonology (sound system organization), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (meaning interpretation),
show proficiency in analyzing linguistic data across these fundamental areas,
utilize their linguistic knowledge objectively, adhering to scientific principles, and
extend their analytical skills to applications beyond linguistic study.
