Cartographers today are far more than just explorers mapping unknown territories of the past. We serve as creative artists, community builders, data analysts, visual communicators, and versatile web developers. In our data-rich world where location services dominate, maps and geospatial information have become indispensable tools. The UWMadison Cartography and GIS program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to leverage mapping technologies for addressing critical societal challenges. The curriculum spans from visual design and interactive web mapping to processing vast datasets and creating mobile applications, with hands-on labs featuring cutting-edge cartographic and GIS tools. While the Earth's surface may be charted in basic forms, the rapid evolution of information systems demands skilled cartographers and GIS specialists to interpret our transforming world.
