The 21st century is often referred to as Asia's era: truthfully, comprehending today's critical global challenges requires deep knowledge of Asian histories, cultures, and languages. With more than half the global population residing there, Asia hosts economic powerhouses like China, Japan, and India. For years, Asian nations have dominated manufacturing worldwide, while their universities excel in both humanities and technological advancements. Notably, half of all nuclear-armed states are located in this region. Clearly, Asia's significance cannot be overstated.
Our Asian Languages and Cultures Department provides diverse courses covering East, South, and Southeast Asia, all taught by regional and disciplinary experts. Whether you're new to Asian studies or have prior experience, an ALC major enhances your capacity for cross-cultural and multilingual engagement. Students can pursue broad transregional and historical approaches or specialize through our focused tracks in East Asian, South Asian, or Southeast Asian studies.
Applicant must have high school record should demonstrate both rigor and breadth in the types of course work you pursue. A competitive academic record should show some of the most challenging advanced-level work offered at or through your school in as many areas as possible, while maintaining a strong GPA. The following chart shows the number of years that most admitted students studied in each subject area; English 4 years, Math 4 years, Social Studies 3-4 years, Science 3-4 years, Single Foreign Language 3-4 years and Additional Academic/Fine Arts 2 years. Applicant must have ACT score of 30 and overall SAT score of 1395.
